We know that choosing a publisher is a big decision. Below are answers to the questions prospective authors ask most often. If you have a question that isn't covered here, get in touch at info@6040publishing.com — we're always happy to talk.
60/40 Publishing is a modern finance publisher built by someone who has been through the publishing process and believes authors deserve a better deal. We handle everything — professional editing, cover design, interior layout, Amazon setup, ISBN registration, and distribution — so you can focus on the ideas. The name reflects our model: 60% of royalties go to the author, 40% to us.
When a book sells on Amazon, Amazon takes its cut first — typically around 40–60% of the cover price depending on format (print, Kindle, audiobook) and distribution channel. What remains is the net royalty. That net royalty is then split between you and us: you keep 60%, we keep 40%.
So if a book generates £5 in net royalties per sale, you receive £3 and we receive £2. Traditional publishers typically give authors just 10–20% of that same net figure. We publish your royalty breakdown transparently so you always understand exactly how the numbers work.
Our core package is approximately £10,000 all-in. That covers professional editing, proofreading, cover design, interior typesetting, Amazon page setup, ISBN, and marketing support. There are no hidden fees.
For authors who want more — bespoke PR, personalised outreach to media and podcasts, or a fully managed launch — we offer enhanced packages tailored to your goals. That kind of hands-on, personal support is something traditional publishers rarely provide, even for their top authors.
Professional structural and copy editing, proofreading, bespoke cover design, interior layout and typesetting, ISBN registration, Amazon listing setup and keyword optimisation, and a marketing toolkit to help you launch.
Optional add-ons include audiobook production, enhanced marketing campaigns, and hardback print runs.
We specialise in non-fiction across finance, investing, economics, and business policy. We're looking for books that offer original insight, clear analysis, and a long shelf life — ideas that compound over time, not commentary on the news cycle.
If you're a professional with hard-won expertise and something genuinely useful to say, we'd like to hear from you.
This is where 60/40 is genuinely different. Our founder, Stephen Clapham, built Behind the Balance Sheet — one of the most widely read investing newsletters on Substack — and has direct relationships with leading finance podcasters, Substack writers, and online communities where your target readers already spend their time.
We don't just list your book and hope for the best. We actively connect your work with an established network of finance professionals, investors, and serious readers. Traditional publishers send out press copies and move on. We make warm introductions to the people who can actually move the needle for your book.
Books are printed individually as orders come in, rather than in bulk upfront. This means no warehousing costs, no unsold stock, and your book is never out of print. Every copy is produced fresh.
It's more efficient, more sustainable, and significantly lowers financial risk for both you and us.
Significantly more than with a traditional publisher. At 60/40, the author has the final say on cover design, title, and positioning. We'll bring professional expertise and strong recommendations, but it's your book and your name on the cover.
We work collaboratively, not prescriptively.
Royalties are paid quarterly — four times a year, like clockwork. You'll also receive regular sales updates so you always know how your book is performing.
No more waiting six months for a vague royalty statement. We believe transparency is non-negotiable.
Send us your completed manuscript or a detailed proposal via the Apply to Publish form on our website, or email us directly at info@6040publishing.com.
We'll review your submission and let you know whether it's a fit for the 60/40 list. We aim to respond within two weeks.
If your question has been answered and you'd like to apply, we'd love to hear from you.
